JCentury old traditions are here still alive. Steeped in tradition the Ladin people are careful guardians of this stirring Dolomite landscape. The drive follows a steep and winding route over mountain passes threading their way between the proud three-thousand meter high peaks. This drive is a sheer delight for sportive motorists. Impressive climbs, serpentines pass through lush green meadows and rock faces. The stupendous views of the looming Sella Massiv are ever-present.

Since 1850 the Pizzinini family has run the Hotel & Spa Rosa Alpina. Linen, wood and marble combine luxurious comfort with alpine splendour. Century old chests, paintings and antiques all serve to tell the detailed history of the Ladin culture at one of Europe's most exclusive hotel addresses. At night the illuminated hotel shines out like a fairytale castle amongst the mountain peaks. The Daniela Steiner Beauty Spa is world class. Equally so is the two Michelin star Restaurant St. Hubertus.

Row after row of little country cheese rounds rest on wooden boards in the centuries-old cellar of the cheese dairy. The outbuildings erected in 1576 stand proudly over the green alpine pasture. The Crazzolara family have been dairy farming here for generations. A few years ago they discovered a passion for cheese production and quickly established themselves as masters of this delicate art. Only unpasteurised whole milk is used to make the cheese. Award-winning cheese enjoyment.

Tight bends and steep hair-pin bends come hot on each other’s heels, taking you to an altitude of 2,239m. The 21-km long stretch connects Canazei with Arabba. The first hair-pin bends take you through refreshing coniferous forests. Tight winding roads then climb up to the col. The robust steel ropes of the lifts and wooden bridges cross crossing the road bear testimony to the busy winter sports seen here during the cold season. From the top, the driver is afforded a great all-round panorama.

Close to the road, the colossal cliffs tower above you at dizzy heights. The Passo di Costalunga takes you through deep gorges to a meadow-covered col. A few bends dotted between the many straight stretches with a view of the Rosengarten massif take you up to Lago Carezza. When the weather is good, the sunbeams dance on the emerald-green water of the lake, and reflect on the lake’s surface the magnificent Latemar massif in precise perfection.

The Passo di Falzarego is part of the Great Dolomite Road. It was built in the 1950s in preparation for the Olympic Games and connects Bozen with Cortina D’Ampezzo. The winding drive takes you over numerous hair-pin bends through forests, past the mighty summits of the Col de Lana and Monte Averau. During the First World War, these magnificent mountains were the scene of the mountain campaign between Austria and Italy. Today, bunkers and tunnels remain as a reminder as the bitter battle.

AOn no other pass do you get this close to the mighty cliffs of the Sella massif. The Passo di Gardena connects Corvara with Gröden. The pass is part of the four-pass quartet which winds its way tightly around the famed massif. The widened roads take you via gentle hair-pin bends and wide bends up to a plateau. From here, motorists can enjoy the idyllic picture-postcard view into the valley. Very narrow and steep hair-pin bends quickly take you downhill towards the Passo Sella.

Prison, court and finally a restaurant. Amongst the medieval towers of the hotel, directly next to the church square are luxury suites and modern spas hidden under ancient vaults. Some 2,000 paintings by renowned painters artistically adorn the centuries-old castle walls. In the tower - a listed building - no two rooms are alike. Gourmets can discover a new twist to South Tyrolean traditional cuisine in the Turm Restaurant. The mountain cellar offers fine local and Italian wines.

FFranz Mulser loves his job. In his 3 m² kitchen the kitchen wonder, who learned his trade with the top of the list chefs Eckart Witzigmann and the Obauer brothers, conjures up his rustic delicacies at an altitude of almost 2.000 metres. The home-made bacon, cheese and ham come from his parents’ farm. In his diminutive alpine cabin he serves up vivid, colourful salads made with edible flowers and hay blossom truffles in a loaf of bread. In 2006 he received the Premio Godio award for his cuisine.
