Umbria

through the green heart of Italy

PDF

Between Tuscany and Rome, while not located in the immediate vicinity of the sea, the area is blessed with a host of cultural treasures, innumerable legacies from the Etruscans, delicious oils, fine cuisine and good wine - this is how Umbria presents itself to the world. It is an open landscape that awaits you, one that opens your heart at first sight. The meadows are lush, rolling away into the distance, whilst in the east, the magnificent Monte Sibillini mountain range continually beckons.

Exclusive farmhouse romanticism! Roccafiore is a delightful feel-good oasis surrounded by vines and olive groves. The scent of rosemary lingers in the air. The medieval bell towers of the picturesque town sparkle golden. 13 rooms and suites in three styles: rustic modern, masterly minimal, or extravagantly stylish are housed in three buildings - an old stone house, a country villa and a modern structure. The spa spoils you with aromas of wild herbs. The view from the pool is divine.

The wines of the Franco Todini vineyard are considered a hot tip by experts. Their names certainly sound promising: Nero della Cervara, Rubro and Bianco del Cavaliere. Wine has been cultivated here since 1968. In 2006 the vineyard estate was reconstructed, however, despite modern architecture, they have kept its traditional style. After harvesting, the grapes are rigorously selected. The wine is produced in limited quantities only. Also homemade are the cold-pressed olive oil, honey and sauces.

Here one can admire the fresco cycle entitled The Life of Saint Francis by Benezzo Gozzoli, one of the best-known Italian artists of his time. The basilica sits majestically on the slopes of the Mount Subasio overlooking the town. It is comprised of two churches, one stacked on top of the other. The upper church is bright, gothic, and high, the lower is an unfussy Romanesque design. In addition to the tomb of Saint Francis, one can also admire the allegorical frescos of Giotto. Some 200 m2 of frescos fell to the floor in tiny fragments during a severe earthquake in 1997. Since then the frescos have been painstakingly restored and returned to their original positions.

The museum is located in a medieval oil mill. Olive oil was pressed here until just a few decades ago. Lavishly renovated, the historic structures and centuries-old characteristics of the mill have been retained. The history of the olive is explained over three-floors and techniques for oil manufacture are shown from ancient times through to the avant-garde. Well-known quotations about the oily fruit decorate the walls. Archaeological finds serve to provide evidence for its mythological origins.

The Perugia Golf Club is situated just 5 km away from the Etruscan town of the same name. Opened in 1959 as a 9-hole course, architect David Mezzacane gave the slightly hilly terrain a facelift at the beginning of the 90s, completely redesigned the course and expanded it to 18 fairways. Play on the short and quick fairways requires both skill and precision. Sumptuously covered old trees border the fairways. The clubhouse was built around two historic limekilns dating from 1921.

The best-known wine of Umbria is the Cervaro della Sala. The Chardonnay is produced from 80% Chardonnay and 20% Grechetto, an old Umbrian grape, and has the aroma of pear, pineapple and citrus fruit. Straw-yellow in colour with a touch of fine vanilla, its name allures to the 14th century owner of the castle. In 1940 the famous Italian aristocratic family Antinori acquired the estate in the Apennine Mountains between Rome und Florence. Their focus is placed firmly on indigenous grape varieties.

The stony island in the green sea: the twelve-sided tower dating from the year 1103 rises defiantly over the trees. Once the residence of cardinals and popes, the former 6th century monastery now houses the Hotel & Restaurant La Badia. Torches romantically light the way between the columns and cloisters at night. Gourmets will love the homemade fettuccine, tagliolini with black truffles and homemade bread with game salami under the tufa vaults of the massive fortress.
