The castles of Eguisheim stand impassively the 591 m high elongated saddle of the castle hills above the Alsace plateaux like three huge watchtowers. The proud fortresses built from colourful sandstone are conspicuous from a great distance. The Dagsburg stands to the north, the Weckmund to the south, and the Wahlenburg in the centre. The last of which is the oldest of the three. All of them were built in the 11th to 13th centuries. The castles lie directly on the Alsatian Five Castles Road.

At an altitude of 956 meters, the location was fiercely disputed. It also allowed the observation of the Alsatian plateaux. The number of soldiers who fell in the battle will always remain unknown. However, at least 30,000 died here. A well-preserved system of trenches remains. A free tour is available in the months of July and August (14:30 hrs).

Some people say that Ribeauvillé is the most beautiful town in the Alsace. However, many know that it is the centre of the art of Alsatian distilling. It is here where self-taught Marcel Windholtz fills more than 10,000 bottles of his finest distilled products annually. The Alsatian Wine Museum is idyllically situated in the former Schwendi Palace. It pays homage to the many winegrowers who have helped Alsatian wine to achieve world-renowned status during the past decades. The museum contains great exhibits including wine jugs, taps and wine presses from 1640 and 1716. The 6 to 35 litre barrels are a real marvel to see. A wine cellar has been realistically recreated. Capuchin monks built the estate in 1612. As it was subsequently sold off as national property during the French revolution it came into the possession of the Faller brothers in 1898. Surrounded by vines and roses, it exudes Tuscan charm and is situated at the foot of the Schlossberg. Colette Faller and her daughters continue the family tradition and passion for winemaking.
