Carinthia

the Carinthian lakes and Nockbergs mountains

PDF

The lakes, the mountains and the southern light have been enticing artists to this beautiful spot for years. Carinthia is an idyllic region full of contrasts, with defiant fortresses, castles, rugged cliffs, defined as much by Friuli on the one side and Slovenia on the other side of the Wurzen Pass. Tightly curving bends pass through one of Austria's idiosyncratic and magnificent landscapes. Well maintained roads make it a delight to drive through sweeping hills and valleys.

Ein Schloss am Wörthersee (A Castle by Lake Woerthersee) - The bright yellow castle became known worldwide in the early 1990s as the setting of the famous Austrian TV series. After a complete refurbishment, it was reopened in May 2007, appears light, jaunty, wonderfully fresh. Almost as soon as it was opened, Gault Millau rated the Schlossstern Restaurant with 17 points and named the Auriga Spa Austria’s Best Spa 2008. Differences in elevation and the venerable trees call for considerable skill. The quiet, isolated fairways then pass through the idyllic, hilly terrain of the Dellach Forest. Prince Orsini-Rosenberg built the castle for his Italian love, Madame Lucrezia, in 1772, adding Italian flair to Carinthia for her. Owned by the Liechtenstein family since 1831, lime-tree avenues and flower-filled gardens surrounde the castle. Life-size wax figures of Elisabeth, Empress of Austria, Napoleon and the castle's masters tell the convoluted story of the castle. Over 3000 hornbeams have been planted between the castle and the zoo to create Austria's largest garden labyrinth.
