Karl Ludwig Schweisfurth was the sausage king of Europe, slaughtering 25,000 pigs a week for his Herta sausages. In 1984, he sold his empire and started from scratch again at Herrmannsdorf farm, idyllically located near Glonn. Today, visitors will find a model of sustainable agriculture, with a restaurant, bakery and butcher's shop. The farm shop sells organic foods and light meals. Children will love the free-range hens and content pigs.

The former Benedictine monastery church built by Johann Michael Fischer is one of the most precious monuments to the 18th century architecture of Bavaria. The Rococo splendour of the High Altar by Ignaz Günther and the central ceiling fresco by Matthäus Günther easily match the glories of the world-famous Wieskirche. The cemetery is the site of the family tomb of former Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss.

In the 1950s Ernst Freiberger conquered the world with EFA ice-cream. In 1972, he was the official supplier to the Olympics. A Mercedes Roadster awoke his passion for vintage cars, and in just a short time, 150 historic vehicles were housed in barns around Amerang. Since 1990, the collection, since increased to 220 cars with the addition of loan exhibits, has been on display in a modern museum on the edge of Amerang. Many valuable BMWs are also on show here.

This is where the steamer trips set out for the shorter tour to Frauenchiemsee and the longer trip to Herrenchiemsee. The fishing island of Frauenchiemsee is famous for its 1000-year-old monastery. The island's inn has a lovely beer garden serving delicious Bavarian food. The castle built by the Bavarian King Ludwig II to resemble Versailles is located on Herrenchiemsee. However, you need to allow a whole day to visit it. You can cross to it directly from Gstaad.

The traditional Tomaselli with its wood-panelled walls is very popular both with tourists and visitors to the Festival. You won't seem many locals here in the high season. Well-known Salzburg actor and politician Herbert Fux, however, always has a seat reserved for him on the last table in the bay window area to the left. The Documentation Centre has become a popular visitor draw since it opened in 1999, with 150,000 visitors a year. The exhibition is housed in one of Hitler's former guesthouses. Original documents and contemporary accounts document the development of Obersalzberg and of the Nazi dictatorship. The former bunkers excavated by the Nazis and reaching miles into the mountain are particularly impressive and form the setting for the history of the Holocaust.

After the end of the War, when many of the Nazi houses had been blown up, the Americans used Obersalzberg to provide R&R for GIs. They built a golf course on the Alpine meadows abandoned by the farmers driven out by the Nazis. Hitler's manor house became the club house. The Berchtesgaden Golf Club has managed the beautifully located 9-hole course since the American's left. Guests of the Intercontinental can enjoy the reduced green fee. A round of 18 holes during the week only costs € 28.00.

During the Third Reich this road was planned as the high point and conclusion of the Alpine Road. The first toll station is just a few minutes from the Intercontinental Hotel. The 16 km road rises to 1560 m, making it the highest through-road in Germany. Motorcyclists and car drivers looking for a challenge love its rough asphalt surface. To get the most out of the experience they turn around shortly before the second toll station and travel back down the road in the opposite direction.

The Ramsau parish church of St. Sebastian, idyllically located by a stream, was a popular subject for many painters way back in the 19th century. Even today, it is still one of the most photographed images in the Berchtesgaden region. Not far from the church, hidden in the forest, lies one of the most original structures of the Bavarian Rococo era. The pilgrimage church of Maria am Kunterweg is reached via a short footpath past several chapels illustrating Christ's Stations of the Cross.
