magic moments above the clouds

PDF

The sporting challenge of driving along demanding mountain roads precisely, quickly and reliably is faced three times along this route: the Grimsel, Furka and Saint Gotthard passes are amongst the most beautiful in the Alps. On the way to the corkscrew of bends, the route runs through valleys in full blossom and Switzerland's most lively artistic and cultural areas. In a rush of intoxication, the curving road dips into the valley and back up, past the most magical spots.

This wonderful landscape is defined by its symbiosis of nature and technology. The hydro power unleashed here generates enough power for a million people. The precarious beauty of the landscape attracts many more. In 1925, Kraftwerke Oberhasli AG built the first dam here –the largest in the world at the time. Electro-mobiles take visitors deep inside the mountain. A guided tour reveals all about the world of modern power generation; the more intrepid can abseil down the side of the dam.

This well-constructed road runs via 13 bridges, a tunnel and 24 hair-pin bends across the Gotthard Massif. It is the most important north-south crossing through the Alps. Bubbling springs and a historic railway are constant companions to the driving experience. The cliff walls bear witness to the Pass's military past: bunkers, artillery posts and corridors that run for miles. On the south side, countless curves run down into Ticino from a height of 2,108 m.

This hotel on the Gotthard Pass is unique given that it is located underground. Swiss artist and sociologist Jean Odermatt built this hotel - completely shut off from the outside world - within a disused Swiss army tunnel. It is many things: a mixture of underground research centre, post-modern sanctuary with a slight feel of a futuristic youth hostel (designer communal bathroom). Be warned! You'll never find it without directions.
