Zurich is famed globally as a financial centre. Yet the Swiss metropolis on a lake of the same name, against the backdrop of Alps that appear close enough to touch, attracts more than bankers and business to the country. A lively arts scene, innovative restaurants, bars and galleries bring to life a once forgotten area of the city with creative visions. In summer, when the lakeside resorts are open and the nights are long and warm, the avant-garde meet to chill at the lake before going clubbing.

160 young birch trees from the Expo 2002 ‘Garden of Violence' are growing in the courtyard of the Greulich. An Asian flair dominates in the birch grove; invisible instruments in the ground and branches sing of peace and life in this magical location. There's also a sense of the Orient in David Martinez Salvany's eccentric dishes. His bold creations of Catalan Slow Food have earned him 16 ‘Gault Millau' points. Prominent figures regularly invite guests to literary evenings at the hotel.

Back in 1993, brothers Markus and Daniel Freitag were looking for a bag that was hard-wearing, water-repellent and functional. Inspired by the heavy goods lorries that constantly drove by along the highways, the now legendary Freitag bag was born, made of discarded truck tarpaulins, old seatbelts and worn bicycle tyre inner tubes. In Zurich, the brothers have piled 17 recycled sea cargo containers into a tower. Containers one and two house the Freitag shop.

It is the last building he designed. The eccentric concrete and stone construction is framed in steel and glass. Brightly coloured panels light up the façade. As a ‘complete work of art' on lake Zurich, it highlights Le Corbusier's universal power of creativity. He was known globally as an architect and town planner, but his artistic talent was far more complex: he painted, designed furniture, created sculptures and wrote. The museum opened in 1967, two years after the artist's death.

The world's most experienced BBQ chefs fry sizzling St Gallen ‘bratwurst' in the Sternen Grill at the foot of the old town.
