His wife Katia was treated for a number of weeks in 1912 in the Waldsanatorium (now the Waldhotel), inspiring the author to the coming-of-age novel. A reconstructed period sickroom open to visitors is located on the ground floor. Today, the establishment is one of the town’s top addresses. The Spengler Cup is this sport’s oldest team tournament. The museum illustrates how the first winter sports competitions looked and has exhibitions of sports clothes, toboggans, bobs and skis from the 19th Century, tracing the history of the development of sports equipment through to the present day.

Visitors to this town of 9,000 inhabitants are greeted by a monumental church standing about 1 km before the town’s gates: The Virgin Mary appeared here in 1504. Straight after the entrance, to the left, is the apparition altar, and the place where the Virgin was seen is marked with a stone. The opulence of the pilgrimage church with its famous organ is certainly has to be seen.

VThe winter sports resort of Bormio is separated from Tirano by the Upper Adda Valley. The route from there takes you briefly over the Stilfser pass, then onward to Livigno via Foscagnopass and the Passo d’Eira. In 1805, Napoleon Bonaparte declared the village, once nigh impossible to reach, a duty-free zone and so it remains today. In the village itself and in the border area with Switzerland on the SS 301, numerous shops such as Da Bice Passera sell luxury products at favourable prices.

The Flüelapass brings the tour to a close in Davos. There, the museum which opened in 1992 is the only one in the world to be dedicated exclusively to the German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880-1938). In Germany, Kirchner is seen as an important expressionist, in Switzerland as an important landscape painter. His abstract works from the 1920/30s received little attention. With 90 works, this exhibition is dedicated to his late works, offering the chance to reappraise him and his works.
