Upper Bavaria

along serpentine roads through the Blue Country

PDF

The water sparkles in brilliant turquoise, old farmhouses border on herb-filled meadows – this is Upper Bavaria straight off a postcode; almost too kitschy to be true. For unadulterated “sheer driving pleasure” there are the three old race tracks: Sudelfeld Bergstrasse, Kesselbergstrasse and Wallbergstrasse. With every metre higher you go, the views over the lush green moor land meadows and the wild enchanting Isar valley get more and more beautiful and you are overcome by a glorious feeling.

In the midst the green eye of the Walchensee with its freely accessible banks shines out. Once a wild mountain river, the Jachen flows from the lake. Wood from the valley used to be transported down river by raft or be drifted to the Isar to be sent on to Bad Tölz and Munich.

The Sylvenstein dam was built in the 1950s. One of its purposes is to provide water-powered generated electricity and another is to avert the risk of flooding between Bad Tölz and Munich. During the construction the village of Fall was flooded beneath the dammed-up waters of the Isar. The reservoir nestles impressively in the mountain landscape. The well-constructed winding road along the north bank of this blue-green lake leads north to Tegernsee or south over the Austrian border to Tyrol.
